ISEA2008
25 July – 3 August
Appropriate Response and Exodus have been developed specifically for ISEA2008 the International Symposium on Electronic Art among other 16 artworks created by international and local artists during their time as artists in residence in Singapore.
These projects were selected by the ISEA2008 committee after an open call for submissions in 2007. New media artists were required to submit proposals that took their inspiration from the conferences five themes: Locating Media, Reality Jam, Wiki Wiki, Ludic Interfaces, and Border Transmissions.
Appropriate Response is a generative audio installation that creates an ongoing, dynamic conversation between three modified television sets. Using sound clips harvested from local broadcast media, the televisions will act as individuals engaged in an evolving topical debate. Each individual will share a basic set of rules on how to proceed and a ‘cultural database’ from which to derive responses while also developing a
‘personality’ that will guide specific choices. The sound-archive that the installation draws from will evolve over the course of the exhibition, allowing new information to be gathered and old information to be ‘forgotten’.
